What is iKickButts?
iKickButts is a smartphone app designed to help individuals and communities eliminate toxic single-use cigarette butts and other commercial tobacco product waste in the environment. This waste is also known as “TEC Waste”.
TEC Waste specifically refers to the non-biodegradable and toxic waste created by:
- Tobacco products (smoked, heated, and smokeless)
- Electronic smoking/vaping devices
- Cannabis products
Developed by the Center for Tobacco and the Environment at San Diego State University, iKickButts provides a platform for exploring the impacts of commercial tobacco products in outdoor environments. The app allows users to photograph, map, classify, and count TEC waste. It enables the sharing findings, downloading of data, creation of reports, and participation in community science projects. iKickButts offers tools for individuals, community groups, organizations, school classes, government agencies, or researchers, supporting efforts to protect the public from TEC waste pollution.

- Share via Social Media, Text, and Email: Raise awareness by sharing TEC waste images and descriptions with your community.
- Download Data: Export detailed TEC waste data in a CSV file for analysis and reporting. Files include information on TEC waste geolocation, tags, date, and time.
- Create Custom Reports: Generate summary reports based on location, time, waste type, and project-specific filters to share findings.
- Organize Community Science Projects: Organize groups by joining existing projects or creating new projects within the app to participate in community science projects related to TEC waste.
- Promote Community Events: Bring people together by creating or promoting events focused on TEC waste awareness and action.
