When collecting and picking up tobacco product waste, how can I do so safely to protect myself?

To protect your safety while collecting tobacco product waste, follow these precautions:

  1. Wear protective gloves – Use nitrile gloves (or similar) on both hands to prevent skin contact with harmful chemicals or sharp objects. Replace gloves if they tear.
  2. Use tools instead of hands – Pick up waste with tongs or grabbers rather than your hands.
  3. Place waste carefully – While collecting, place items directly into a designated trash bucket or bag.
  4. Stay safe while collecting – Consider wearing a safety vest.  Do not step into the street or enter private property. Also, it is safer and more fun to do this with a friend or a group.
  5. Avoid touching your face – Keep hands away from eyes, mouth, and face during collection.
  6. Dispose of waste properly – Seal the trash bag and place it in an outdoor garbage bin.
  7. Wash your hands – Wash hands with soap and water immediately after finishing.
